Presentation 3

Surveying and Interviewing Strangers (Yikes!)

Assessing American Priorities:  A Survey of American’s opinions on Important Social Issues

The next presentation you will do will require you to collect a lot of information from American citizens.  You will work with a partner for this presentation and will collect part of your information with your partner and part of the information on your own.

You will use the attached survey form to survey and interview American citizens about their opinions on pressing social issues.  There are three parts to the survey:  pre-survey questions, the survey itself, and post-survey questions.  You will be asking the pre-survey and post-survey questions verbally to your survey participants.  The ranking may be done by giving your survey participants the paper and having them write directly on the paper so you have a written copy of their results.

You and your partner will need to interview 20 participants amongst the two of you.  I will give you a chance to interview up to six people as a pair during class.  However, you as individuals must find the remaining survey participants and interview them outside of class time.

Once you have surveyed and interviewed your 20 survey participants, you will need to assess and evaluate the information you’ve collected.  You will be presenting this information to the class through your spoken presentation and through a graphic or graphics that visually represent the material you’ve collected.  There will be many ways to assess and interpret the information you’ve collected.  When doing so, take into account the demographic information you collected during your pre-survey questions.  Often a person’s age, ethnic background, income bracket, profession, or other demographical characteristic will be the reason why he/she ranked items the way he/she did.  Look at all this information critically, and incorporate the post-survey responses to let the class know why you believe people ranked the information the way they did.

REMEMBER:  When approaching people for the survey and when conducting the survey/interview, always be polite, listen attentively, and be sure to thank your survey participants when they are done taking the survey.  Make it a POSITIVE experience for the survey participants, not something they regret doing.
